The typical response to the foregoing question is usually a resounding, “no.” However, more often than not, it is a mistaken response. Further, a criminal record, regardless of the age of the crime or the level of the offense, does not fade over any period of time. Requisite steps must be taken to clear the record or else the remnants of the dismissals and/or convictions will remain indefinitely. They will continue to follow you and create collateral consequences such as the inability to secure employment, housing, public benefits, parental rights, FOID cards, and much more.
